A little known species of sea turtle known as the baggoes lives in a sea turtle nursery in the Pacific Ocean.
When it’s not living in the nursery, the baggies have been known to travel the world to explore the ocean, find food and even mate with a variety of sea turtles.
But that’s about to change.
This species is under attack from human fishing, habitat loss and climate change, says Richard Wray, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory.
The baggoe is in danger of disappearing because of climate change and human activity, he says.
Scientists have identified three main threats to this species: pollution, habitat destruction and climate variability.

What is the baggie?
The baggie is a small sea turtle with a shell that measures about one-quarter inch in diameter.
It lives in the deep waters off Hawaii, where the population is in decline due to overfishing.
It’s estimated that the bagga population in Hawaii is now down to less than one dozen, and scientists are working to reintroduce it back into the wild.
The ocean is a particularly vulnerable area for sea turtles because the warm waters of the Pacific ocean tend to be saltier and more acidic than the cooler waters of tropical oceans.
“A lot of the marine animals that live there are really important for the ocean ecosystem, so you don’t want them to be taken over by human activity,” Wray says.

The sea turtle has been known for more than 1,000 years to use shells from other turtles as food and shelter.
The shells have long been used to protect the marine creatures from predators and to seal off the shells from sea birds and other marine mammals.
But when researchers in the 1990s began studying sea turtle nests in Hawaii, they discovered that some of the turtles were laying eggs in shells from another species of turtle, the dusky sea turtle.
The researchers realized that the dussies eggs were not the same as those of the sea turtle, so they took a closer look.
Researchers soon realized that these turtles eggs had some similarities with the nests of other sea turtles, including a thick shell and a pouch on the shell that held a single egg.
Scientists now believe that this egg is a hybrid, and researchers have been studying its genetic makeup to find out if it’s genetically related to other sea turtle eggs.
Scientists are now using DNA analysis to determine whether the hybrid is related to the sea turtles or not.
If the hybrid isn’t, the researchers are working on finding the best way to reintroducing the sea shell turtle back into its native habitat in Hawaii.
In the meantime, scientists are monitoring the population in the islands’ northern waters to make sure the sea shells are healthy.
The Pacific turtle population is on the rise and researchers believe that in the future, the population could grow to about 2,000 to 2,500.
The scientists are also working to find a way to increase the habitat for the sea tortoise to provide more prey.
If they manage to do that, scientists believe the population will likely reach 3,000 in the next 10 years.
